THE GREAT JOCK ‘N’ ROLL SINGLE

VOTE for your favourite Top 10 Scottish singles of all-time (and the Worst)

Hame

The search to find the Great Jock ‘n’ Roll Single is almost over as the poll closes it’s ballot boxes on 28 February 2007.

The response to this poll has been amazing and over the last 5/6 months we’ve met some great people, people who are as passionate about music, and Scottish music in particular, as we are.

As the Singles poll closes you’ll notice some changes in the site as we remove the single sleeves and put up some album covers from the great and good of Scottish rock and pop. We also hope, finally, to unveil the new site, which is currently undergoing some fine tuning in the Jock ‘n’ Roll shed.

Soon you’ll have your opportunity to nail your colours to the mast and show your undying love for Sheena Easton’s not-so-fabulous “Fabulous” album of disco covers or The Krankies’ “The Garage Sessions”. Please use these pages as a reference point to remind you of the greatness that is the Scottish album and to pick your 10 favourites (plus the worst).

But please read the rules first at “How to Vote” page...

Top 100 Scottish Websites

We promised that our main chart wouldn’t get bigger than 75 but for the festive period we put up a Top 150, which seems to have raised more than a few eyebrows. We’re back to normal now with a smaller, but perfectly-formed, Top 75 until the final one is published in March. None of this download-only nonsense. This is a real chart, with real records. You can actually smell the vinyl from our charts page. If Chris Moyles even thinks for one moment that he’ll be able to hype Billy McPiper into our chart he’ll be given short shrift and sent away with a flea in his ear and a size 10 up his jacksie.

Now you’ll be able to find the latest chart and assorted stats on the thoughtfully named “Charts and Stats” page.

Several people have been in touch to let us know of Scottish bands that they were in, who went on to release a cherished piece of 7” vinyl* (*other formats are available).

Feel free to let us know about your band and we’ll gladly pull up a chair and listen to your sobs of “we could’ve been the next Jesse Garon and the Desperadoes” before adding your name under the correct letter in the Artists pages. Shoulder to cry on is optional.

Thanks to all the publications and people who have helped publicise this poll so far:

Andrew Collins (BBC 6music), Daily Record, The List, Grant Stott (Radio Forth), Giselle, Duglas T Stewart (BMX Bandits), James Hackett (The Orchids), Martin Millar, Paul Livingston (Trashcan Sinatras), Lenny Helsing (The Thanes), Horse McDonald, Debbie Taylor (Wet Wet Wet Forum), Brian Lewis (Deadline Scotland), Fred MacAulay and Co (Radio Scotland), Murdo MacLeod (Cateran/Joyriders), The Times, Web User magazine and Christopher Brookmyre amongst many others.

SITE NEWS :

THE POLLS ARE STILL OPEN...UNTIL 28 FEB

Yes, the search for The Great Jock ‘n’ Roll Single comes to a tearful end soon as we pack away our tartan–coloured 7” singles boxes and raid the IKEA Billy shelves for those bigger slabs of vinyl and of course them new-fangled CDs.

Dave and I will retire to a local hostelry in the coming weeks as we decide on the rules for the imminent Great Jock ‘n’ Roll Album poll, the natural successor to the Single one.

As soon as all the votes have been counted and verified, we’ll add a page to show the final Singles chart, probably an extended one like the one we published at Christmas, and some associated Stats, which I know Dave is particularly looking forward to.

OTHER NEWS: If you are on the roads of Fife over the coming months I suggest you be mindful of the fact that The Cat has been allowed by the authorities to sit behind the wheel of a motorised vehicle. Okay, he hasn’t passed his test yet but it’s only a matter of time. He’s hoping to pass his test before his midlife crisis sets in and if he doesn’t he’s off to get some naked lady tattoos and join a hippie commune.
